Carol What motivated you to find a spiritual home in Judaism?
I grew up Catholic and although I had substantial religious training, I never felt a strong connection. I felt that many religious and spiritual questions I had went unanswered. In my teens I stopped practicing. Later, I married someone who was a “secular” Jew. Throughout our marriage I learned as much as possible about Judaism and felt a deep loss for him and for me. At that point, I realized that I wanted to lead a spiritual life and that Judaism held the key.
How did your family react to you decision to become Jewish?
Being older, it wasn’t an issue. My family respected my decision.
Do you go to temple or are involved in other Jewish organizations? Do you feel welcome there? Do you find them meaningful?
Since my conversion, I explored a few congregations. I have felt welcome, but I realize that the only way to get connected is to get involved. I have recently gotten re-married to another Jewish man, but one who cherishes his faith and his heritage. We have just recently joined the synagogue of the rabbi who married us.
Why did you choose a conservative program (JDI) – or a Conservative synagogue?
Prior to converting I spent time at Orthodox synagogues, Chabad. However, I did have a hard time finding someone to sponsor me in conversion. When I visited a Conservative synagogue I found the right balance of ritual and spirituality for me. Do you have any advice for other individuals considering conversion to Judaism?
Don’t worry about having to know everything right away, e.g. learning Hebrew. It will come. Just follow your heart.
